The American School in Paris
The American School in Paris, established in 1946, is a coeducational, independent international school that formed part of the postwar expatriate educational network serving the American community. During his Paris years, Ellsworth Kellyworked there as a part-time children’s art teacher for approximately one year, supporting himself financially while developing his early abstract practice.
Although formative, Kelly’s teaching experience at the American School in Paris was short-lived, ending abruptly in 1951 when the school’s director dismissed him after seeing his exhibition at the Galerie Arnaud in May of that year.
