Kenneth E. Tyler

Publishers and master printers

Active in Paris: 1963–1964

Kenneth Tyler (1931–2021) was an American master printer, publisher, and one of the most influential collaborators in postwar printmaking. Kenneth Tyler did not permanently live in Paris, but he spent significant periods there during the 1960s and maintained close professional ties to the Parisian printmaking world.

Most notably, in 1963–64 he worked at the Atelier Desjobert in Paris, where he collaborated with artists including Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, and Robert Motherwell. These Paris experiences became foundational to his later development of Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles and Tyler Graphics Ltd. in the United States.

So while Tyler was not a Paris based expatriate in the way John Ashbery or Joan Mitchell were, Paris played an important role in his formation as a master printer and collaborator.
