Académie André Lhote

18, rue d'Odessa, Paris

The Académie André Lhote was a private art school founded in 1922 by André Lhote in Montparnasse. The academy offered a structured approach to composition grounded in Cubist principles, emphasizing geometry, balance, and the analytical construction of form.

Unlike more rigid academic institutions, Lhote’s teaching combined theoretical instruction with practical studio work, attracting a wide international student body. The academy functioned as a bridge between traditional training and modernist experimentation, contributing to the dissemination of Cubist ideas among younger artists.

Among its students were Tamara de Lempicka, Dora Maar, Henri Cartier-Bresson, situating the school within a network of artists who would go on to shape modern art and visual culture.
