Hôtel de Bourgogne

Île Saint-Louis (Kelly's 1st Studio)

After moving between inexpensive hotels during his first winter in Paris, Kelly settled in the spring of 1949 at the Hôtel de Bourgogne on the picturesque Île Saint-Louis, where he maintained a room that functioned as both living quarters and studio for nearly three years. During his stay there, he began creating his first abstract paintings. Members of his circle, including Ralph Coburn, and visitors such as John Cage and Merce Cunningham, are documented as having stayed at or visited him there.
