Merce Cunningham
Merce Cunningham (1919–2009) was an American dancer and choreographer and one of the leading innovators of modern dance. Cunningham collaborated closely with the composer John Cage and became a central figure in the development of postwar avant-garde performance. During Ellsworth Kelly’s years in Paris, Cunningham visited Kelly’s studio at the Hôtel Bourgogne in the summer of 1950 together with John Cage, who was staying in the same hotel.
