Joan Mitchell Studio “La Tour”, Vétheuil

Av. Claude Monet, Vétheuil, France

In 1967, Joan Mitchell acquired a property known as La Tour in Vétheuil, using funds from her mother’s inheritance.

She moved there permanently in late 1968 following major renovations. Located approximately 70 kilometers northwest of Paris, not far from Giverny, Claude Monet had previously lived there.

The property was set against a hillside and included gardens, fruit trees, and a separate structure at the top of the hill, formerly a game pavilion, which she converted into a studio. The site offered views of a twelfth-century church, the Seine River, the village of Lavacourt across the river, and the surrounding landscape. Mitchell referred to the landscape as her “View of Delft.” Near the end of her life, Mitchell reflected: “The solitude that I find in my studio is one of plenitude. I am enough for myself, I am fully there.”
