Artists

Active in Paris: 1949–1968

Shirley Jaffe (1923–2016) was an American painter associated with postwar abstraction, raised in Brooklyn. Her early work was aligned with gestural abstraction, later developing into a distinctive, structured abstract style. She moved to Paris in 1949, where she became part of the American expatriate art community. Within this milieu, she became connected with Sam Francis and his circle of friends, and in 1955 Jaffe, together with Paul Jenkins, introduced Joan Mitchell to Jean-Paul Riopelle.
