Paul Jenkins Studio

Rue Decrès, Paris

A studio located on Rue Decrès in Paris, established by Paul Jenkins following the success of his early European exhibitions. Jenkins divided his time between New York and Paris throughout his life. In 1957, Jenkins and Joan Mitchell exchanged studios for a period of approximately two years: Jenkins worked in Mitchell’s studio at St. Mark’s Place in New York, while Mitchell worked in his studio on Rue Decrès in Paris.

1955–1959: During this period, Joan Mitchell lived and worked between Paris and New York. In Paris, she lived and painted in a series of temporary studios—eight in total—which posed logistical challenges and imposed various constraints on her work. Paul Jenkins’s studio was among them.
