François Chapon
François Chapon (b. 1928) is a French writer, publisher, and art historian closely associated with the activities of Aimé Maeght and the Galerie Maeght. He worked within the gallery’s publishing structure and became an important figure in the production and editorial development of Derrière le miroir, the art magazine founded in 1946, which accompanied exhibitions and documented developments in postwar modern art.
Within this context, Chapon contributed texts and editorial material for the publication, participating in the dissemination of critical discourse surrounding artists exhibited at the gallery. His involvement extended to writing essays for individual issues—for example, contributing texts to later editions of Derrière le miroir, including commemorative and thematic publications associated with the Maeght circle.
During Ellsworth Kelly’s years in Paris, Chapon formed part of the intellectual environment surrounding Galerie Maeght. In this capacity, he contributed to the circulation of texts and documentation related to artists exhibited at the gallery, including those involved in the Tendance exhibitions in which Kelly participated.
