Georges Braque
Georges Braque (1882–1963) was a French painter, printmaker, sculptor, and one of the founders of Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso. Beginning from Fauvism in the early twentieth century, Braque developed a radically new visual language based on fragmentation, shifting perspective, and the structural analysis of form, fundamentally transforming modern painting.
Following his service in the First World War, Braque moved toward a more meditative and tactile approach to still life, interior space, and material surface. Throughout the interwar and postwar periods he remained a central figure within the Parisian art world, working extensively across painting, printmaking, sculpture, and artist’s books. Closely associated with Aimé Maeght and the Galerie Maeght publishing network, Braque became an important contributor to the postwar revival of the French livre d’artiste, collaborating with poets, printers, and publishers on illustrated books and deluxe editions that merged text, image, and material experimentation.
His meeting with Fernand Mourlot in 1945 marked the start of an exceptional production that began with the Teapot series, followed by numerous fruit still lifes. At the same time, he began to paint Greek-inspired subjects, followed by birds, a major theme in Braque’s work. At Mourlot, he works with Henri Deschamps. Georges Braque, together with Henri Matisse, played a role in introducing Pablo Picasso to Fernand Mourlot. During the 1940s and 1950s, many of Braque’s lithographs and artist’s books were produced at the Mourlot Studios, while in 1952–53 he completed The Birds, the celebrated ceiling commission for the Louvre.
