Lawrence Rubin
Lawrence Rubin (1933–2018) was an American art dealer active in Europe and the United States, and an important figure in the postwar art world. He directed galleries in Paris, Rome, and New York and later served as director of Knoedler Gallery until 1995.
In Paris, Rubin founded and directed Galerie Lawrence, where he exhibited contemporary artists associated with postwar abstraction. In 1962, Joan Mitchell held a solo exhibition at the gallery, placing Rubin within the network of dealers supporting American painters working in France.
Operating within a transatlantic framework, Rubin contributed to the circulation of artists and ideas between Paris, Rome, and New York, participating in the broader gallery system that shaped the international postwar art scene.
