Artists

Active in Paris: 1951–1953

Al Held (1928–2005) was an American painter associated with Abstract Expressionism and later with geometric abstraction. His early work was characterized by gestural abstraction, while from the early 1960s he developed a structured, hard-edged style exploring spatial complexity and color.

After studying in New York, Held moved to Paris in 1952, where he lived for several years and became part of the international community of artists working in the city. During this period, he was connected to the circle of American expatriate artists that included Joan Mitchell and Sam Francis.
