Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986) was a French philosopher, writer, and intellectual associated with existentialism. A central figure in the postwar Parisian intellectual scene, she is best known for her philosophical work Le Deuxième Sexe (1949), which became a foundational text of modern feminist thought. Together with Jean-Paul Sartre, she was part of the circle of writers and thinkers associated with the cafés of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, including Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots.
