Dealers

Active in Paris: 1946–1968

Jean Fournier (1922–2006) was a French art dealer and gallerist, founder of Galerie Jean Fournier. He began his career as the director of the Librairie Kléber in Paris, where he organized exhibitions (he offered one to Riopelle in 1957, that helped him build a network)—an activity that led him to open his own gallery on Rue du Bac in 1964.

A champion of emerging artists during the 1960s and 1970s, Fournier transformed his gallery into a vibrant meeting place for critics, poets, and artists alike. He supported artists including Sam Francis, Shirley Jaffe, Riopelle, Hantaï, and Joan Mitchell, who held her first exhibition at the gallery in 1964.
