Active in Paris: 1948–1953

Carmen Herrera (1915–2022) was a Cuban-born American painter associated with geometric abstraction and hard-edge painting. After studying architecture in Havana, she moved to New York and later spent several years in Paris between 1948 and 1953, where she became involved in the circle of abstract artists active in the postwar Paris art scene. During this period, Ellsworth Kelly and Herrera were both part of the community of young painters working in Paris. Both artists exhibited in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, an important platform for postwar non-figurative abstraction.
