Galerie Maeght
Galerie Maeght was one of the most influential galleries in postwar Paris, specializing in modern and contemporary art. Founded in 1945 by Aimé Maeght, the gallery quickly established itself as a leading platform for both European modern masters and contemporary artists.
The gallery represented major figures including Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, and Fernand Léger. Its programme combined painting, sculpture, and graphic works, with a strong emphasis on artists associated with Cubism, Surrealism, and postwar abstraction.
In addition to exhibitions, Galerie Maeght functioned as a major publishing house, producing high-quality illustrated books, prints, and the influential art journal Derrière le miroir, which featured original lithographs and texts by leading artists and writers.
The gallery also hosted the annual Tendance exhibition, directed by Louis Clayeux, which presented contemporary developments in abstraction. Ellsworth Kelly participated in these exhibitions in the early 1950s. Joan Mitchell’s partner Jean-Paul Riopelle later exhibited with Galerie Maeght in the 1960s, therefore the couple maintained a long-term relationship with the gallery and its associated institution, the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
