Jean-Paul Riopelle
Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923–2002) was one of Canada’s most significant artists of the twentieth century. He settled in Paris in the late 1940s, where he became one of the most prominent Canadian painters internationally and was later represented by Galerie Maeght. Stylistically linked to several major art movements of his time, Riopelle developed a large and diverse body of work spanning both abstraction and figuration.
In 1955, Jean-Paul Riopelle met Joan Mitchell through Shirley Jaffe and Paul Jenkins. They began a relationship the same year and lived together for approximately twenty years, from 1955 to 1979.
